Joey Logano turned a lap of 124.630 mph in his Joe Gibbs Racing Home Depot Toyota Friday afternoon to win his first career Sprint Cup pole and earn the top spot for Sunday's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
"To back up what we did in practice was key for us,” said Logano, who led the day's practice session. “The car was quite a bit freer than we had it in practice. That was a big deal for us, to get our first pole. I never thought it would come here.”
Kurt Busch will start outside the front row in the Penske Racing Miller Lite Dodge.
Dave Blaney, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top five.
Juan Pablo Montoya, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Marcos Ambrose and David Reutimann completed the first ten qualifiers.
Terry Cook and Casey Mears both qualified fast enough to start their first race of the season on Sunday.
Bobby Labonte, who spun earlier in the day in practice and had to go to a backup car for qualifying, made the field with a past champion’s provisional.
Mike Bliss and Max Papis failed to qualify for the race.
Sunday's Food City 500 is slated for a 1:15 p.m. (ET) green flag.
