It took an extra day to complete, but for Dario Franchitti it was worth the wait.
After crews fixed a slippery portion of the track, Franchitti went out and won the pole for Grand Prix of Brazil with a lap of 104.058 mph in the Firestone Fast Six.
"I was a little surprised to get into (the Firestone Fast Six)," Franchitti said. "I didn’t have a very good day yesterday. We struggled to get my car the way I wanted it to work. We all sat around the table and came up with some ideas, and I think we saw the results. I give all the credit to the team. Today, the track is great. The tires are lasting very well. It will be a good race.”
This is the first time in Indy Racing League history that qualifications have been held on the scheduled race day after they were moved from Saturday to Sunday.
Alex Tagliani qualified second in the first qualifying session for the newly formed FAZZT Race Team.
Justin Wilson, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Will Power rounded out the top five.
Rookie Simona de Silvestro was the top qualifying female in 11th.
Today's Grand Prix of Brazil will take the green flag at noon ET.
