Jimmie Johnson is back at the top of the rankings after scoring his fourth victory in his last five starts at Phoenix. RacingOne's rankings are based on a combination of season-to-date loop data, season standings and staff selections by Jeff Wackerlin and Rachael West.
1.
Jimmie Johnson: Johnson didn't leave much room for anyone else to shine at Phoenix as he led a race-high 238 laps en route to Victory Lane. The victory was his third straight win in the fall event at the track. Johnson now just needs to finish 25th or better at Homestead to become the first driver to win four straight Cup Series titles. He's finished 25th or better in all but one of his eight starts at the track, but has yet to win at the track.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 112.1 Point Standing: First Last Week's Ranking: Second
2.
Kurt Busch: Busch was the only driver to challenge Johnson's dominance in Phoenix on Sunday, as he led 69 laps early in the race. But, he had to settle for a sixth-place finish at the end of the day after losing grip throughout the race. Busch is within striking distance of third place heading to Homestead-Miami Speedway. He is a former winner at the track (2002) but has had mixed results since then. In eight starts, Busch has three top fives and an average finish of 21.5.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 100.6 Point Standing: Fourth Last Week's Ranking: Third
3.
Mark Martin: Martin put in a good fight at Phoenix climbing from his 10th starting spot to finish fourth, despite having a tight race car in the closing laps. But, it was hardly enough compared to Johnson. Martin trails him by 108 points and needs to win the race in Homestead and lead the most laps, and see Johnson finish 26th or worse in order to clinch his first Cup Series title. Martin didn't race at the track last year, the first year the COT was used there, and will make only his second start at the track in Chevrolet. All four of his top fives at the track came with Roush Racing, and with nine starts, he has an average finish of 12.0.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 100.5 Point Standing: Second Last Week's Ranking: Second
4. Jeff Gordon: Gordon bounced back from two finishes outside the top 10 in the prior two races, to score a ninth-place finish at Phoenix. It was his first top 10 at the track since the fall of 2005, but it wasn't enough to leave him in contention for the championship. He'll instead try to hold onto third-place in the standings as he holds just a 42-point lead over Kurt Busch heading into the season finale. Gordon will also try to get to victory lane this weekend, as Homestead is the only track on the circuit where he hasn't won a race. He has five top fives and eight top 10s in 10 starts and an average finish of 9.9.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 101.7 Point Standing: Third Last Week's Ranking: Fourth
5.
Jeff Burton: Burton has climbed in the rankings after posting a third consecutive top-10 finish this season at Phoenix this weekend. His second-place finish was his best result yet this season. He's done so well recently with help from new crew chief Todd Berrier. The so-far successful combination will take its show to Homestead-Miami this weekend, where Burton has an average finish of 15.8 in 10 starts. He's finished in the top five three times with Roush Racing, but only has one top-10 finish with Richard Childress Racing.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 75.5 Point Standing: 17th Last Week's Ranking: Ninth
6.
Denny Hamlin: Hamlin jumped back on the rankings with a third-place result in Phoenix. After running near the front of the field for most of the race, he posted his second consecutive top five this season. Hamlin has been fairly successful at Homestead in three starts there since his 33rd-place finish in his debut there. He has two third-place finishes and a 13th-place finish since his debut.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 101.8 Point Standing: Eighth Last Week's Ranking: N/R
7.
Kyle Busch: Busch was able to run in the top 10 for most of the day at Phoenix even after suffering some damage in a run-in with Jeff Gordon on lap 129. But, since his car was best following restarts and there were only a few during the race, Busch was only able to reach the 12th position in the end. He's still holding on to the 13th spot in the standings but will have to work hard to hold onto with Matt Kenseth trailing by only 45 points. Busch has yet to finish better than 19th at Homestead-Miami in four starts there.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 97.7 Point Standing: 13th Last Week's Ranking: Sixth
8. Greg Biffle: Biffle slipped in the rankings after suffering some handling issues in Phoenix. He started sixth and was running in the top 10 for much of the early part of the race, but finished 14th. Biffle's still in seventh in the standings with a 31-point lead on Hamlin, and he's a three-time winner at Homestead-Miami. But, besides his three consecutive victories, Biffle hasn't scored any further top 10s at the track in seven starts. His average finish is 13.4.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 88.5 Point Standing: Seventh Last Week's Ranking: Fifth
9.
Clint Bowyer: Bowyer is back on the rankings after posting his second consecutive seventh-place finish this season. He's posted a quarter of his season's top-10 finishes in the last six races. Bowyer will try to earn his 17th top 10 of the season in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He's coming off a fifth-place finish there last year and has scored two top 10s in three starts at the track.
Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 82.9 Point Standing: 15th Last Week's Ranking: N/R
10. Martin Truex Jr.: Truex Jr. makes his second appearance on the rankings this season after posting his first top-five of the season. Truex earned his third pole of the season at Phoenix and managed to turn it into a fifth-place finish. He heads to his second best track on the schedule based on finishing average this weekend. Truex has an average finish of 12.5 in four starts, with three consecutive top 10s in his last starts there.
