CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The last time Martin Truex Jr. competed in the special Dale Earnhardt Tribute car he was taken out of contention on lap 9 at Talladega last month.
This Time, the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops pit crew team was able to put the paint scheme in Victory Lane as the they put on an outstanding show on Wednesday night at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena en route to capturing the second annual NASCAR NEXTEL Pit Crew Challenge and the $70,100 prize.
The No. 1 pit crew began the night in round one by setting the best time of 25.29 seconds to top the 24 teams competing in the event.
Defending champions, Kasey Kahne's No. 9 Team, came up short in the end as they lost to the Bass Pro Team in the finals 26.71 to Truex's 25.44. Although they already lost, the No. 9 team was given penalties pushing his time back to 31.71 seconds.
Jeremy Mayfield and Carl Edwards lost in the semifinal round.
Round one saw 14 teams score at least one penalty with Denny Hamlin's team getting hurt the most with a 14.00-second penalty.
Individual $10,000 prizes were awarded to select members in the opening round. See below for winners.
Pit Crew Challenge Recap A total of 24 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup pit crews will compete for an overall grand prize. Each of the seven over-the-wall pit-crew positions will compete for a $10,000 prize. Kasey Kahne’s No. 9 Dodge Dealers pit crew is the defending overall champion.
Round One Chosen by a random drawing, all teams compete, two teams at a time, against the clock in the individual skills/team competition, with eight fastest teams progressing to Round Two as determined by overall team time.
Additionally, the fastest crew member at each station will be crowned at the individual champion in the following in the following categories: front-tire changer and carrier, rear-tire changer and carrier, jack man and gas man/catch-can man. Each of the winning crew members will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
